Here's my initial list of proposed forum categories. It's similar (but not identical) to the existing TR categories. Any thoughts? And what should the sub-forums under these be?

Hardware
Software
Science and Technology
Hobbies and Special Interests <-- or should this just be part of "Everything Else"?
Everything Else

I'd probably make Hobbies sit under Everything Else.

I also suggest we don't create one sub-forum for every possible topic -- that'll just force people to subscribe to many. The structure at ThatOtherSite was nearly perfect, IMO.

I always vote on the KISS principle - simpler is better. So some off topics get somewhere, but this isn't really a huge community ATM. If it gets bigger you may have to fine tune it in the future. But for now not a big issue I'd say.

IOW keep the list of top level categories and the lists of sub-forums relatively small. I think I can get on board with that. If there are too many choices, people are more likely to not pick the right one.

And here you can fine tune it by threads. Back porch could have seperate music, vehicles, random, etc threads.

We could make Science and Tech a top-level and then put Hardware, Software, Mobile, and Networking in there, maybe? And then the Back Porch could be a part of Everything Else, along with Hobbies, Gaming, and R&P?

That's a total of 8 forums in 2 groups. Is that a reasonable grouping?

Needs an R&P section. I usually participate in those, and fully understand why people don't want to find that stuff littering up other topics.

I'd start with 1 (can it be 0?) top-level categories, and a minimal number of subforums.
Otherwise, without much traffic, it would just look empty and inactive. Split later if it gets too busy.

How about just:
  • Hardware
  • Software
  • Games
  • Everything Else
Then see how it goes.

Perhaps we could continue the ones we have right now on Slack?

Don't forget some sort of "for sale" section. Came to mind today when I realized I'll be getting rid of some gear soon. Some of which is actually fairly decent, if a few years old.
