Fix for error 4000 when updating an iOS device with iTunes on Windows:

- Disable your device's passcode and enable it after the update.

It's apparently a known bug with the current version of iTunes on Windows. Reportedly, the USB connection "gets interrupted" by the passcode request (yes, I know, it makes as much sense to you as it does to me).

I'm guessing it's probably a safety valve to prevent USB hardware attacks to the device.

That might well be, but I've never had this kind of issue in the past. According to reports, started happening in contemporary versions of iTunes.
