F1's call to go ahead with the 'almost oval' plan shows Liberty is living up to its promises to try to shake things up in grand prix racing. As this year's calendar choice has shown – with Mugello, Imola, Portimao and Istanbul being given slots – there has been no playing things super conservative with track choices. That it's willing to push the boundaries with things like track choices this year bodes well for what other things it may be willing to do in the future. That will become especially true when we have a new governance structure from next year which means the sport is no longer handcuffed by the need for unanimous team support.
Bring on the Bahrain oval, and bring on more exciting choices for F1.

From 1950 to 1960, Indy was a points race for the F1 driver's championship. If you're gonna run an oval, why not the original one?

Because there are U.S. travel bans in place preventing the teams from visiting the U.S. from Europe and because there are European travel bans in place preventing the teams from traveling back to Europe after visiting the U.S.?
Long straights, just a few fast corners and the quickest F1 lap in decades (54 seconds for 2.277 miles = 230+ km/h average)? I predict that every Ferrari-powered car will finish at least two laps down to the winning Mercedes.

45 seconds is 200 MPH average. Given F1 trap speeds on circuits like Spa, it'll be damn interesting to see comparative lap times. Pole speed for Marco Andretti this year was roughly 38.9 seconds lap time (231.351 MPH 4-lap average). F1 can surely do better than 54.
Oh, and that's 230 MPH, not KPH. My WRXs could do 230 KPH.

The races were much more interesting a year ago before Ferrari got caught cheating on fuel flow.
With the Mercedes being much faster than the other 18 cars on the grid and Bottas being given team orders to not pass Lewis, it makes for a very boring race.

Well, that was entertaining. It's very unusual to see the most calculating driver in the field make a boneheaded rookie mistake, but it certainly made for a much more interesting race after Hamilton's penalty. However, the tifosi were likely still disappointed with the race. The highest placed Ferrari-powered car was Romain Grosjean's Haas, and he finished behind a Williams.
