I would probably pick something in this area (#DDDDDD). Its light enough for good contrast, but not bright white which, I agree, is too much.

Technically the theme does not satisfy WCAG 2.0 compliance (a big deal for SEO, as I understand). It's recommended the foreground and background have a contrast ratio of 4.5:1.
The #859398 used by links is NOT compliant against #252F39 (the lighter color where posts have their text). It's a 4.2:1 ratio.
The default text color of #90a3c0 is 5.3:1 which is compliant but something brighter would be much better.
The text in the reply box uses #e1edff which has a ratio of 11.5:1, and would be my choice.

The spoiler text suffers from even lower contrast than the regular text.
